Best of Halifax – Bryan Style
The Coast has their Best of Halifax awards. This year I’m giving out mine. I choose the categories and I pick the winners. This is great!
Events & Venues:
Best Live Sporting – Halifax Rainmen. The Mooseheads would be a close runner up, but I’ve got to give support to the new team in town. The Rainmen play a fast paced game with some local talent. And, for now anyways, there are always great seats available.
Best Athletic Field – Commons. The new fields have artificial surfaces. I like the good old fashion grass and where better than at the centre of the city.
Best Park – Point Pleasant. Even though there hasn’t been enough done to recreate a great environment following Juan, this is still the best place to take a walk or hang out with friends in the summer.
Best Place of Worship – Deep Water Church. On Spring Garden. Comfortable environment. Cool people. Free food and coffee. I’m there. What more can you ask for? (I’m biased on this one)
Best Coffee Shop – Wired Monk on Hollis. Here’s the thing, I would have chosen Just Us on Spring Garden but they close at 9 and they are strict about it. That’s too early. They’re both fair trade, which puts Timmies and BigBucks to shame. All the shops tend to be crowded during busy times, but hey, this is Halifax.
Best Lunch Spot – Stayners (Ferry Terminal). Quick, reasonably priced and good food. Plus, a nice patio in the summer.
Best Nighttime Hangout Spot – Niche on Barrington. Tasty food. Quality music. Relaxed environment. Always good for a Saturday night.
Best Live Music – Bearly’s House of Blues and Ribs (Barrington). Though there are better environments to hear specific bands, Bearly’s has live blues so it’s always good place to go for some tunes.
Services
Best Financial Services – Scott Christie, RBC Spring Garden. Great guy, great service. Highly recommend.
Best Salesperson – Don Burke, Touch of Gold jewelery. Don was working at Dexter’s when I was shopping for cars. Even though I didn’t buy from him, I still say he’s the best. Patient. Genuine. Helpful.
Best Waiting Staff – Your Father’s Moustache (Sp. Garden). They’re cute and friendly and there’s lots of them to make sure for good service. The Mustache is also my favorite patio in the summer.
Best Physio Service – One to One Wellness, Dresden Row. Nick and Kelty do a great job and they’re the advocates of the Slow Burn in town. Gotta love that (see my other blogs on it).
Random Others
Best Place to Sell Stuff – Kijiji
Best Place to Buy Tires – Coast Tire on Young Street
Best Grocery Store – Atlantic Superstore on Joseph Howe
What do you think? What did I miss?

Don Burke is the absolute best, whether it is Touch of Gold, The Vault or Dexters Audi. He is a wonderful person and a dear, old friend. Nice to see his name ‘in lights!’
Great job!
