24 – Season 7

I said, back in the fall of 2007, that making Tony Almeida the bad guy on 24 would be ideal for the show; poetic almost.  And it is true, the added drama has put 24 back on top of current shows.  I would not go so far as to say that 24 is what it was, seasons 1 through 3 were amazing.  But it is back to being engaging and entertaining.

I found the first episodes of this year slow and predictable.  There lacked a lot of the chaos and unpredictability of previous seasons (not including season 6).  And there was not much drama.  They were trying with Jack and Renee, but it really wasn’t believable.

With Tony going bad, killing FBI agents and leaving Jack helpless it brought back a sharpness to the plotline that had not been there since episode 4 of season 6 when the nuke went off.

So now they have got the show on track and have the audience engaged.  How this season is remembered and how the show goes on in future years will depend on how effectively they build the hero/villain tension between Tony and Jack.

What do you think?  Are you enjoying the show this year?  Do you think they can finish season 7 strong or will they waste the Tony/Jack potential?

Totally disagree with you. I was loving this season until the end of episode 18, when Tony suffocated Larry. I was sort of ok with Tony being a bad guy in the beginning, though I was relieved when it looked like he was undercover. I was ok with the fact that he said he had been really working for Emerson and had done some bad things. But having him pretend to be on the good guys’ side all day and then betray everyone is over the top and totally out of character, and the show hasn’t felt the same the last few episodes. Nothing makes sense, and it’s like Carlos Bernard is just playing a different character who happens to have the same name.

One of the things I was loving about this season was seeing Jack and Tony out in the field together again and the way they developed the “brotherhood” between them more than in previous seasons. It kills me to see them destroy all that, and it just makes no sense.

Man, for 24 being such a tough, explosive show, the comments I get from 24 fans make me think that we’re talking about Little House on the Prairie.

How about Jack’s wife being senselessly killed? Jack shooting Curtis? Palmer getting assassinated? The show is built on harsh twists and explosive tension.

I’m still not feeling the compelling tension of this season. The female agent seems to belong on Desperate Housewives, not 24. Without Tony turning again it would be Little House on the Private Army Compound. I still don’t feel the drop in my stomach at the end of each episode. I still don’t count down the days until the next episode. Where’s my weekly adrenaline rush??

wow, you guys are really into this. i definitely don’t feel IT as much as in seasons 1-3 but at least they have a rebel first child on the loose again.
